'Plaaskoffie' is the afrikaans (my first language) word for farm coffee - I scanned it from an old coffee tin we inherited from my mother in law. I absolutely love a good cup of freshly brewed coffee and usually don't have more than three cups a day, definitely three of the highlights of my day! Rose ampersand

This is so interesting - from Wikepedia, the ampersand can be traced back to the 1st century A.D. and the Old Roman cursive, in which the letters E and T occasionally were written together to form a ligature. Traditionally, in English-speaking schools when reciting the alphabet, any letter that could also be used as a word in itself ("A", "I", and, at one point, "O") was preceded by the Latin expression per se (Latin for "by itself"). Also, it was common practice to add at the end of the alphabet the "&" sign as the 27th letter, pronounced and. Thus, the recitation of the alphabet would end in: "X, Y, Z and per se and". This last phrase was routinely slurred to "ampersand" and the term crept into common English usage by around 1837.

The rat and the rooster

In Chinese astrology the rat and the rooster is not compatible - as both are competitive creatures. Rooster is outspoken, keen on the spotlight and grabbing attention - the natural defense of the rat is to nag at the rooster. However this was not the inspiration for my design, our beloved pet rat died over the weekend and I thought it would be fun to include a rat in my design, they love to sit on a height and look at their small world - I will miss her inquisitive cute little face. The rat and rooster and fan graphics are from Graphics fairy - linking to Brag Monday.

The Three Muses challenge this week is to steampunk a famous person . . . . now once again steampunk got the better of me! I was all over the place - I started with Beethoven the futuristic pirate clutching what can only be described as a supercharged gramophone and then I went all botanical on Joan Collins, capturing her in a cloche with mechanical butterflies around her - really it was a mess :-) Eventually I stumbled upon this black and white image of the lovely miss Marilyn Monroe and as soon as I put the goggles on her face it reminded me of the movie "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow". So here is my poster for the imaginery Steampunk movie, Le Ballon - don't hold your breath, it is never coming to a theatre near you!

Roaring Twenties

I really like the boyish look of the 1920's, although there was not a lot of emphasis on body shape it had it's own kind of charm. The waistline if any, was located somewhere around the hips. The confining corset was discarded, replaced by a chemise or camisole and bloomers which was later shortened to panties or knickers and during the mid-twenties all-in-one lingerie became popular. My favourite - the short hairstyles such as the Bob cut, Eton Crop and the Marcel Wave became popular. Thanks for taking the time to visit - my entry for the 1920's challenge at Three Muses.

I had lots of fun designing a faux magazine cover for my entry for the stars and stripes challenge at Take a Word this week, the girl is from a vintage gum advertisement and she was dressed in pink - I used a vintage flag to dress her up for the occasion. I've used this lovely antique background from the Graphics Fairy so many times, it is so beautiful with all the scrolls and flourishes - linking to Brag Monday and many thanks to my favourite fairy in the whole wide world. When I saw the pink and brown challenge over at Theme Thursday, my first thought was hot chocolate and fluffy pink marshmallows- yum!!! I love the rich chocolate brown script of this card and I thought it pairs so well with the dusky pink roses - I decided on the leopard spots as a background for that touch of whimsy.

I have to slow down and made the decision to only post every second day from now on.
